Keto Italian Sausage Surprise

By Amber Wood on Tuesday, April 29, 2025

Snowshoeing up epic mountain peaks with my adventure dog at my side. A twelve-mile mountain bike ride followed by a zen-like cold plunge into an alpine lake in April. Hand feeding my Norwegian Forest Cat fistfuls of organic home-grown catnip in my backyard. I may not be Julie Andrews as Maria from The Sound of …

Keto Alfredo Mushroom Delight Hot Pockets

By Amber Wood on Saturday, April 26, 2025

Today in Big Bear Lake California, we took all of Big Bear’s most well-behaved pooches on a snow hike by the donkey graveyard. After a donkey graveyard snow hike, of course, I am ready to create a Keto Chicken Alfredo lunch! But first snow dog shenagians We have about three hundred wild burros who call …

Venison Keto Vindaloo with Jicama “Spuds”

By Amber Wood on Tuesday, April 22, 2025

Okay, yes, I have been a little obsessed with venison recently. As someone who has an eccentric Cousin Bob from Idaho (Okay, maybe Cousin Bob is not that eccentric, he’s just a democrat), I grew up my whole life lusting after venison and antelope when my family from Idaho Falls would travel from Idaho to …

Keto Jalapeno Cheese Biscuits

By Amber Wood on Friday, April 18, 2025

I blinked and I almost missed snowshoe season! Now that it is April here in our ski town, I may just be hanging up the snowshoes and pulling my mountain bike out of storage. If mountain biking season is on the horizon, then that means I will have zero gluten in my life. My gluten …

Breakfast of champions; Cashew Cookie Keto Protein Bars

By Amber Wood on Monday, April 14, 2025

This is the winter of my discontent, between almost no snow for my snowshoeing needs and a busted ankle. What is an outdoor adventure girl to do? If you asked Shakespeare, the Bard of Avon would definitely say write a long-ass poem. Back in the 1600’s low-carb was just not a thing and even the …

About Me
Amber Woodyard
Amber Woodyard

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest and I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a hiking guide who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at [email protected] for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures in my blog on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
