The Best Spicy Cold Cut sandwich to Power Your Long Distance Trek

By Amber Woods on Monday, June 10, 2019

I had been hiking straight up a mountain since just before dawn when I came across Dry Lake at just over nine thousand feet. Trekking through a foot of snow for the last two hours had been rough and my calves and hamstrings were on fire as I finally took a break to catch my …

Lightning Strikes and the Bird Flu

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, June 5, 2019

This mornings July sunrise was one of the most gorgeous I had ever seen in a long time. The sky was full of pre-thunder storm wispy clouds and stripped with pinks and purples. It was a stunningly gorgeous sight as we parked the truck near the bottom of the Skyline Trail. Looking back now, I’m …

I Used to be a Runner

By Amber Woods on Saturday, May 11, 2019

I can’t recall how many early mornings I’ve found myself lacing up my running shoes in the dark and pounding out miles of alpine trails before the sun even came up. I have literally almost run into sleepy Black Bears on our trails through the wilderness, as the sun was just beginning to rise over …

Kitchen Sink Smoothie

By Amber Woods on Saturday, May 4, 2019

Sometimes life can be unbelievably stressful. All you want to do is go for a badass mountain bike ride but there are forty-five mile an hour wind gusts and the air is a thick brown blanket of dust. So you stay home and follow the old senior citizen cat around with a mop cleaning up …

The Best Fish Balls in the World

Fish Balls

I will never pick up a package of Fish Balls again without thinking of Hong Kong. I ate a lot of fresh fish from the South China Sea while on holiday in Hong Kong three years ago. Some of it was delicious, some of it was bland and some of it was Fish Balls. They …

About Me
Amber Wood
Amber Wood

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest and I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a hiking guide who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures in my blog on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
