Most of my friends make fun of me when I tell them I’m going to the naked Korean day spa because of the wrinkly old naked Koreans. (I’m pretty sure I will be pretty wrinkly at 55 too so I’m not judging, just saying some Americans are afraid of the naked) I’m pretty sure in their minds, they just see Kim Jong-un, and let’s face it, no one wants to see that pudgy lil dude naked. That’s not exactly how the Korean day spa experience goes, but I’ll try to give you a break down of my honest experiences at my favorite health spa. A day at the naked Korean day spa might not seem as much Zen-like as a day at tranquil The Spa at ARIA, Las Vegas but you too can have a tranquil and maybe even peaceful spa expense at Imperial Health Spa’s Las Vegas or Fullerton location if you can just ignore the naked and maybe do some pushups if you get bored in the steam rooms and the sauna. What is the major difference between a normal day spa and a relaxing morning at the naked Korean day spa? You have to be naked 100 % at the Korean day spa or the little ladies who work there will yell at you and tell you to leave if you so much as think of wearing a bikini or any other piece of clothing. Besides that, I actually prefer the Korean day spa as they don’t just have a jacuzzi and a sauna but they have a wet sauna, a dry sauna, a dry salt sauna, an ice room, a red clay room, a jade room and a freezing cold tub you can jump into after sweating in all the saunas all morning. Way more zen for your buck than any other sauna around.
But you may see naked women doing pushups.
Yes, I said pushups.
Today while trying to find my Zen at the naked Korean day spa one of the wrinkly naked lil ladies gave me the best idea ever. I was sitting in the wet sauna trying to breathe the extremely hot and humid air and clear out my lungs especially after I’ve been sick last week when I realized the lady on the floor of the sauna was doing push-ups. What an amazingly smart idea! What do I love even more than naked Koreans? Multi-tasking! Like as in, combining my work out time and my Zen time into one hour. Not to mention doing push-ups and other Insanity exercises in the incredible humidity had me sweating like a beast.
I’m definitely the minority at the Korean day spa, I’m usually the absolutely only white person there, and usually the only person who is not speaking Korean. Now at least I fit in a little bit since I’m doing push-ups in the sauna with the naked Korean women.
Seriously though, you have never sweated like when you are doing squats, Burpee’s, and lunges in an incredibly hot and humid sauna environment. North Koreans, you might have an obsession with your squat lil leader, Kim Jong-un but you had some excellent workout ideas today this morning. This is a true story; the lil lady in the sauna with me this morning was doing push-ups and I tried really hard not to look (though the thick steam) but really she had a great idea! When you do your favorite set of exercises in a hot and humid sauna you sweat like you can’t imagine. It’s awesome!
With all joking aside there is really no joke to what life in North Korea is like and what the people who manage to escape from this communist country go through. Just recently I finished reading, The Girl with Seven Names, A North Korean Defector’s Story by Hyeonseo Lee. This girl was just a few years older than me, growing up in extreme poverty under a ruthless dictatorship in North Korea, surviving her countries famine and ultimately escaping life in North Korea around the same time I was learning to drive here the United States. At a time in life, I was discovering how much I loved hiking trails, hanging out with friends, working full time and going to school this young Korean girl was trying to escape life under a secretive and brutal communist regime. This book was highly addicting and extremely well done, showing a glimpse into a country ravished by poverty and brainwashed by their own nation. Reading a biography like this made me thank God I am American and be very thankful for the civil liberties and right to free speech we have here in the U.S. of A.
Also, doing naked pushups and getting bested by someone ten years older than me at the naked Korean day spa made me realize, dude I need to work on getting back into top shape and eating healthier. Good thing I am obsessing over these tasty protein bowls.
After a sweaty morning workout like this, I’m craving a protein bowl that I’m completely obsessed with right now. Are you craving fish tacos but don’t want the extra fatty crispy fried-ness of fish tacos? Well, you have to try this protein bowl, made with awesome spicy cauliflower rice, and delicious Dover sole. This high protein bowl gave me the protein for extra push-ups and all those Insanity moves.
