Sourdough Sweet Potato Chapati’s

It can be a happy holiday once again with these healthy homemade Sourdough Sweet Potato Chapatis!

This is a real dog.

Although nothing says Happy Thanksgiving like a mongrel Chihuahua wandering into your garage for an early morning pee. At least when you live in a ski town, yup some tourists are just constantly missing a little dog that’s gone on a walkabout. Or sometimes a cat! Seriously who takes their cat on vacation but kitty cat travel time has become trendy here in 2024. (Thanks Instagram) When I personally go on vacation I am on vacation from those six a.m. cat calls from my twenty-five-pound Norwegian Forest cat “Feed me now!”

I’m pretty sure when Nico the Chihuahua with no tags wandered into my garage at 8 a.m. my rescue pup from Ensenada down in Baja California must have thought family was just visiting for the holidays. Luna loves all other dogs even two-pound shivering, smaller than my cat, little morsels. No seriously though, I was like what the hell do I do here. Everyone else in my house was asleep still and I was dying to invite the little lost Chihuahua inside to play with Leo the Norwegian Forest Cat (He loves dogs, especially dogs close to his size) but I had a feeling loud noises could occur. And I really had to get to the market asap and grab the last few veggies I needed for my Thanksgiving feast!

Trekking through the forest wondering why everyone would own a Chihuahua

Pain in the turkey neck

Luckily Nico’s family realized he had gone walkabout and came driving down our street. Seriously, every single other neighbor on our street except us is out of town for the holiday. While I was standing in my driveway contemplating Chunuhaus who don’t even understand the sit command and also why anyone would also ever purposely bring a Chihuahua into their lives, Nico’s parents came to collect him. I had groceries to purchase. I had a turkey to roast. I had an adventure pup who really wanted to inhale her holiday turkey neck. I had a busy day full of sweet potato chapati shenanigans ahead and no time for other peoples doggy drama!

Did you know, by the way, you can feed your pup that holiday turkey neck if it’s raw? Yup. Tru story. I mean not everyone is cool with feeding your pup a raw diet. But if you are, go for it. It is the holidays after all, for man’s best friend as well.

What says Happy Thanksgiving more than sweet potatoes? These are such an easy Thanksgiving bread option. These easy chapatis are so delicious, full of that sweet potato flavor and they actually stay soft! I hate when you make a handmade tortilla or bread and they get hard and crusty.

What can you do with Sweet Potato Chapiti’s?

  • These Sweet Potato Chapits are the best with some scrambled eggs for breakfast. Make a breakfast taco!
  • These are the best with a Vegan Mushroom Muttar.
  • They are so delicious with some Bitchin Sauce, rotisserie chicken and pickled red chilies.
  • These are a great easy and delicious Thanksgiving side dish!

Is it even Thanksgiving if you don’t make a side dish with a homemade sourdough starter?

You can always roll these out by hand but I prefer to flatten them in a tortilla press. Fry them up with lots of ghee in a cast iron skillet. If you are a fan of the fiber-full sweet potatoes it does not get any better!

Sourdough Sweet Potato Chapati’s

3 2 teaspoons Greek yogurt

1/4 cup sourdough starter

1 and 3/4 -2 cups white flour

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 sweet potato, cooked and mashed

Lots of ghee

Mix your sweet potato, starter and the yogurt.Mix in the flour and salt and knead just until you have a nice ball of dough. Set aside to rise for one hour. You may need to add more flour at this point and pull the dough back together again. It just depends how much your dough rises. It should have a consistency like pizza dough. Roll your dough out into dough balls a touch larger then a golf ball. Set plastic wrap on both sides of your tortilla press and press each dough ball into a tortilla shape. Fry both sides with lots of ghee in a very hot cast iron skillet.
