That Girl in the Red Hat

By Amber Wood on Saturday, May 4, 2013

I tried to run Mt Baldy with friends the other weekend.   I failed in so many ways.   I did not reach the top of Mt San Antonio, more commonly known as Mt Baldy, at 10,006  feet.   I also lost my friends before the massive hike/ run even began and ended up doing the whole thing solo.   Even with …

Yucca Plants, Cacti and Pine Trees

By Amber Wood on Tuesday, April 30, 2013

This part of the mountain is very drastically different some times.       We are so close to Joshua Tree National Park and when I run in this alpine forest I see everything from Yuccas, to Joshua Trees, to cacti, to wild larkspur and juniper trees.     Today I ran a brand new trail that was …

Vintage Tattoo

By Amber Wood on Friday, April 26, 2013

It has been fourteen years since my first tattoo experience, a single band of horses galloping majestically around my right bicep. Except the guy who inked my tattoo in in the year 1999 apparently had no idea what a horse looked like. He drew on my right bicep what could only be described as a …

Unbelievable Fall into Stinging Nettle

By Amber Wood on Thursday, April 25, 2013

I hike and run in our national forest which sits just outside my door all the time.    You would think I would be aware of the painful make you itch, sting and your skin ooze disgustingly for days plants.    Yet every spring and summer I find myself drawn to poison oak and Stinging Nettle …

T is for…Teeth-A-Rexia

By Amber Wood on Wednesday, April 24, 2013

I’m really not paranoid about a lot of things in my life. I’d rather live life and be happy and not be stressed out about the random things that don’t really matter in the long run.   I do stress out about the color of my teeth.   I might have a mild case of tooth-a-rexia.   …

About Me
Amber Woodyard
Amber Woodyard

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest and I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a hiking guide who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at [email protected] for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures in my blog on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
