The Audacity of Destroying my Ankle the First Day of Camping

If I was going to name my book it would be The Audacity of Destroying my Ankle the First Night of Camping.

Good morning from the high sierras. ( over 8,000 feet) As I sit in my tent, somehow try to pull my Uggs over my severely swollen ankle and contemplate making campfire coffee.

I can’t believe I severely rolled my ankle on the first night of our camping trip. This is a trip where we were planning to hike at least ten miles a day. The only positive thing to come out of this injury is that I can enjoy all of the new camping gear I’ve just bought. I used CampingTentExpert to find a new tent and some other camping accessories and at least I can make really good use of them now. Our new tent is very luxurious, it has so many different compartments! I’m glad of the luxury now because it gives me somewhere to rest whilst my ankle tries to recover. We took a while to decide which tent was best, and we had to get our heads around the solar charge controller sizing we needed for our (very handy) solar power pack. But it sure was worth it! Anyway, last night I took a bad step walking back from the restroom at dusk and wrenched my left ankle worse than I ever have in my life. We thought it was bad, real bad, as my ankle began to swell up even as we iced it. Than we compared it to my right ankle and realized both of my ankles make me look like a monster! My boyfriend has always been jealous of my hikers cankles while he walks around with the ankles of a Thoroughbred and I look like a damn Clydesdale but seriously, I have some ugly ankles.

Even though I managed to hurt myself last night, White Mountain on Monday is the main goal of this camping trip. With Barry at my side, I just might make it to the summit at over 14,000 feet.

So that is why I pulled my aching body out of my warm sleeping bag and hit the trail at eight a.m. with the sierra sun already hot on my back as we made our way through the Little Lakes Valley.

I may be slightly injured, but if nothing else I can enjoy a fantastic mountain sunrise creekside at the scenic East Fork Campground near Rock Creek Lake, followed by an ascent up Mono Pass at over 12,000 feet that I really don’t know how I pulled off. All I can say is my boyfriend is an expert at taping up my bum ankle that has given me issues ever since I almost destroyed it in my senior year of high school. Yup, fifteen years later I still can’t wear high heels.image

I may have been injured today, again, but we still had a great day on the trails in the Little Lakes Valley as we hiked about three thousand feet in altitude gain ( yes, I almost puked from altitude sickness near the summit) over an eight mile hike.

Top of Morgan Pass; done

At the end of the hike we enjoyed lunch and some fishing at gorgeous Ruby Lake below the peaks of Morgan Pass.
The Audacity of Hope; a great title for a day of high sierras fishing. Even if we are not catching any fish today at Ruby Lake, is there any where better to spend an afternoon?
