In a Small Town

   I saw a UFO once.

Okay you can laugh now. Go ahead, have a good old laugh at the red neck girl who lives in the hick mountain town and has seen a UFO.  That sounds so typical, right?

I was eighteen at the time of my UFO sighting. I didn’t drink, so you cannot blame that on the fuzzy haze of alcohol. I have never done drugs in my life, so guess you can’t blame that either.

What I saw was an unidentified flying object. There is no getting around the fact I saw something super natural that cannot be explained with any reasoning when I was eighteen years old.

It was a warm summer night in my home town, a quiet mountain hamlet with few sheriffs and few crimes. When I was eighteen my friends and I were not drinkers like the other teenagers we went to high school with.  Instead of getting hammered on a Friday night we would climb up mountain sides with flash lights, looking for frogs in creek beds.  We would go sledding or we would go out late in the evening hunting for the wild donkeys that roamed our alpine forests. It was a good life and a fabulous way to grow up.

On this summer evening I was house sitting for a neighbor who had dogs and cats. I worked at the time for my buddy at his pizza restaurant in town. I spent my summer throwing pizza dough, covered in flour from the tossing of the yeasty dough and always reeking of garlic.

It was my night off and I had a few friends visit the place I was house sitting. We got hungry and drove the mile into town to my work to pick up one large pizza, extra cashews.  We drove the winding mountain roads into town in my beat up Dodge pickup, parking on streets that were nearly empty. There was little light pollution like in the over populated valley below our mountain town and we could see every star in the sky. The Big Dipper and Orion’ Belt were almost always visible.

I climbed out of the truck into the dark night and let Dallas and Kristin out of the bucket seats in the cab of the pickup. As we young girls scrambled out of my dirty blue truck we saw an intense bright light in the sky right above us.

   “What is that?” We whispered.

“It has to be a helicopter” Dallas said, shielding her eyes from the bright spot light.

“It can’t be a helicopter, its silent” I whispered. The streets were also silent. Other town’s folk stood around us, gazing up at the bright spot light. It felt so spooky; I felt chills up and down my arms, goose bumps even on this warm summer’s night.

Suddenly two girls came out of the bar across the street, a wooden door slammed shut with a bang! Suddenly these two drunken bimbos were in the street on their hands and knees praying. Okay they might always remember this as just another drunken night at the Fireside Lounge where they might have seen a UFO. I however was completely sober and there is no explanation in my mind for what I saw that night.

I can still hear how silent the night was for those few moments and I can still see that bright spot light when I close my eyes. What was that?

Woot woot we both did yeahwrite this week! And I saw something like that a few years ago from my deck, no one reported anything. Maybe crazy William the Running Springs hobo with the Jesus sword is right, ufos and government ninjas in the trees. Ok maybe he is wrong about the ninjas.

Did the police (or whatever) tell you what it was since more that one person witnessed this crazy thing? I love this type of story, especially when they allude to alien cover ups and such.

So, many people saw it. Was there a follow up? Did anyone figure out what it was? I’m so jealous! I would love this while having simultaneous goosebumbs! Great story!

Good story! For stuff like this, I always think why couldn’t it be real? This universe is too huge for us to imagine we know everything about it!

Interesting. At first I thought you were just being funny though and writing only “I Saw a UFO once” because I’m used to the badge appearing at the bottom of the post. For some strange reason, that cracked me up.
